States and the federal government invest in workforce development programs to prepare citizens for the jobs of today and tomorrow. While each initiative is different, they typically seek to promote economic development, education and training by partnering with local businesses.
Below is an overview of some state and federal initiatives:
Sample of State Programs
The California Labor and Workforce Development Agency oversees numerous job posting and training resources. In addition, it supports America’s Job Center of California, the state’s one-stop site for employment-related services.
Colorado: Workforce Investment Works
Workforce Investment Works includes job postings through Connecting Colorado, a place where individuals seeking employment and businesses seeking employees are brought together.
Accelerated Training for Illinois Manufacturing (ATIM) is accepting applications from individuals interested in advancing their skills in one of four high-demand areas of manufacturing. Right now, over 10,000 jobs are available in Illinois in:
- Mechatronics (Equipment Service and Repair)
Individuals selected to participate will benefit from personal career development; paid job skill training and national credential exams; work-based learning opportunities with manufacturing employers; ongoing team counseling; and permanent job placement.
Illinois: Illinois workNet Center
To expand economic opportunity Illinois workNet utilizes partnerships and technology to expand real-time access to workforce development resources. Illinois workNet includes job postings that connect locals with opportunities throughout the state in all industries, not just energy.
The Midwest is emerging as a focal point for energy job creation. Iowa’s New Energy Economy connects applicants with high-wage, skilled work opportunities throughout the state. It includes a continuously updated job listing supported by Iowa Workforce Development.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission provides job hiring services such as resume review, training programs and apprenticeship listings. Besides assisting workers with finding jobs and exploring new careers, it provides extensive information about licensing and certification programs recognized by the state.
The Department of Education's Jump Start Program is the state’s program for school districts, colleges, and businesses to collaborate in providing career courses and workplace experiences to high school students, certifying them for the career fields most likely to lead to high-wage jobs. Jump Start will ensure students access to state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and professionals to prepare during their high school schedules for careers in Louisiana’s high-growth job sectors.
Jobs4Jersey is supported by the State of New Jersey’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development. It provides workshops, job search help and networking opportunities. It also established Talent Networks to focus on specific needs of key industries, including the Advanced Manufacturing Talent Network, which provides career tools and job postings for manufacturing job seekers.
JobsOhio drives job creation and investment in Ohio by attracting new businesses and supporting retention and expansion efforts. It works in many industries, including advanced manufacturing and energy, to help businesses understand local job markets and new opportunities.
Ohio’s Office of Workforce Development provides information and tools to locals; including explanations of state laws, employment services, hiring support and labor market information. OhioMeansJobs Centers are also located throughout the state to assist job seekers, connecting them to On-the-Job Training opportunities and other state and federally-funded programs.
Texas: Texas Workforce Commission
The Texas Workforce Commission connects job seekers with employers through job postings and skills development programs. It also provides information on training opportunities, courses and scholarships.

NAWB represents approximately 600 Workforce Investment Boards around the U.S. and their 12,000 business members. Boards coordinate and leverage workforce strategies within local communities ensuring that state and local workforce development meet the needs of employers.
ShaleNet leverages the collective experience of industry, the public workforce system and a consortium of colleges to help individuals build lasting careers in the oil and natural gas industry. Launched in 2010, it is supported by a collection of federal, state, and private grants. ShaleNet provides information about the industry, entry-level positions and training programs.
